-Chen Zhen is a man who went to Kyoto, Japan to study engineering. He braves the insults and general dislike from his Japanese fellow students for his love of Mitsuko Yamada, a beautiful Japanese woman. He returns to his native Shanghai in 1937 to find it is under Japanese rule. His reason for returning? He read about the death of his kung-fu master Hou Ting-An in a fight against Japanese fighter Ryuichi Akutagawa. While dismissing all suspicion against the kung-fu school, Chen exhumes his master to prove Hou died from posioning. Both Japanese and Chinese make this case difficult, a test of honor, so to speak.
