Jersey Shore: WTF?

What exactly is everyone's obsession with this show? Yeah, they're Italian, they're also showing off alot and I mean ALOT of bad Italian stereotypes!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jersey_Shore_(TV_series)

The Wikipedia description
-American reality TV show that premiered on Dec. 3, 2009
-Follows the lives of 8 housemates spending their summer at the Jersey Shore in the state of New Jersey
-Season 2 had them going to Miami
-Season 4 was in Italy
-This was somehow dubbed an icon
-In 2011, the show came under fire for it's use of the word Guido/Guidette, which could be considered offensive to the nearly 75%+ Italian population of New Jersey. This show came under fire for exhibiting too many Italian stereotypes as well, and also because the cast members are not locals or residents of the area
Now, My description
-Stupid reality show that takes place on the Jersey Shore in the awesome state of New Jersey
-4 overly tanned, overly slutty Italian chicks named Jenni 'J-Woww', Nicole 'Snooki', Sammi 'Sweetheart' Angelina Pivarnick
-3(I'm leaving out Vinny. I don't watch the show, but I think he's cute!) overly tan, overly tattooed, overly muscular Italian dudes named Mike 'The Situation', Pauly 'Pauly D', Ronnie Ortiz, and Vinny Guadganino. Now, personally, the only 2 that I think are probably halfway decent are Vinny and Ronnie. They look sweet, loving. If I could find a sweetie like either one of these 2, then ok.
-Season 4 in Italy, and Season 2 in Miami
-Overly tanned, overly slutty and overly tattooed guys and chicks making all Italians look bad, with the 'Italian Stallion' stereotype, flirty, exotic woman stereotype, and making all Italian guys look like they all have one thing on the mind and that Italian chicks are going to blow anything that moves and have an Oompa-Loompa tan. Well, guess what, you non-Italian fakers? I have a stepdad who is waaaaaaaaaaaay more Italian than you. And at least the light tan he has is real, it's called olive skin, not spray tan!
Episodes
Cast

-Angelina Pivarnick
-Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi
-Ronny Ortiz-Magro
Or this one
-Pauly DelVecchio
Hey Pauly, get rid of the Mobster hairdo. And OMG, looking at him screams Italian stereotype!
-Vinny Guadganino
I'd go out with this one!!!!!
-Sammi Giancola
-Mike Sorrentino
Media
Controversy
Prior to the show's debut, UNICO National, The National Italian American Foundation(NAF), the Order of the Sons of Italy in America, the Italian internet watch-dog http://www.ItalianAware.com and other Italian American organizations requested MTV cancel the show, calling it a "direct, deliberate and disgraceful attack on Italian American." The UNICO president Andre DiMino said in a statement that "MTV has decorated the brothel-like house with Italian flags and red, white and green maps of New Jersey while every other shot is of Italian signs and symbols. They are basically bashing Italian-Americans with every shot possible".
MTV responded back by basically saying that the cast takes pride in their Italian heritage, and what really is stupid is that Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi is not even 1 quarter Italian. She is actually Chilean-born and an Italian couple named Polizzi adopted her, that's why everyone is convinced of her Italian roots

-According to Dr. Seth Forman, a dermatologist from Tampa, Flor. The show has glamorized the need for tanning. "The young adults on Jersey Shore think tanned skin is important. Some even own their own tanning bed... it's ridiculous. I don't think young adults know how much damage they are doing to their skin."

Stereotyping
-A columnist at the New York Post named Linda Stassi criticized MTV, saying that Jersey Shore is a show "in which Italian-Americans are sterotyped into debasing and degrading themselves, and by extension, all Italian-Americans- and furthering the popular TV notion that all Italian-Americans are gel-haired, thuggish ignoramuses with fake tans, no manners, no diction, no taste, no education, no sexual discretion, no hairdressers, no real knowledge of Italian culture and no ambition beyond expanding steroid and silicone enhanced bodies into sizes best suited for floating over Macy's on Thanksgiving,"

Protest Against Jersey Shore
-Seaside Heights Borough officials have been distancing themselves from the sho.
-Most people who watch the show are completely oblivious to the fact that the majority of the cast coms from New York. As a result of this, out of towners assme that New Jerseyans are all like 'Jersey Shore'. And even New Jersey governor Chris Christie has spoken out against the show.

Here's my advice: if you want to watch something out of New Jersey that's Italian, go with The Sopranos or if reality is your game, I got ya covered. Try Cake Boss. It's similar to Jersey Shore, except no slutty broads. It's about an Italian family run bakery in Hoboken, N.J.Or

Italian Media Stereotypes

There are dozens of stereotypes in the media against Italians.

The HBO show The Sopranos came under fire when it premiered in 1999. It showed Italians as being part of the mob

2009: When Jersey Shore premiered, it showed alot of stereotypes, such as the flirtatious exotic young women, the hot blooded young guys, the Italian Stallion looks on the guys-tall, tan and muscular. And to note as well, almost 75%+ of New Jersey is ITALIAN, you stupid Jersey Shore morons. That don't make Italians look so good.

When it comes to mob films, the people playing mobsters will almost always end up playing someone who is Jewish-Italian, Irish-Italian, they will possess a strong New York/New Jersey accent, even if they are not native New Yorkers or New Jersey-ites.

Sometimes mob life is glorified by figures like John 'The Dapper Don' Gotti or Dominic 'Sonny Black' Napolitano

There is also a stereotype about appearance, big Roman noses, dark features, dark brown/black hair, dark eyes, tan skin.

Italian Stereotypes

I honestly can't believe there are stereotypes against Italians. It personally offends me, I'm not Italian, but my stepdad is. And I don't appreciate people thinking bad things about people of Italian ancestry. This post will show some of the "supposed" stereotypes against Italians.

Here are some of the most common ones:
  • Tolerant of violence
  • Ignorance
  • Labor Bosses
  • Organized crime association
  • Political corruption
Sometimes Italians will be shown as perpetual foreigners, some of the stereotypical Italian-held jobs include:
  • Construction workers
  • Chefs
  • Peddlers
  • Plumbers
  • Any working class job
Other stereotypes include:
  • Italians being shown as working class thugs
  • Violent immigrants or Mafiosi
Italian women have been stereotypes against as well.
  • Overly matriarchal old women
  • Overly flirtatious exotic women with a taste for Italian made items (i.e. Armani, Prada, Gucci, etc)
  • A lesser stereotype but one nonetheless is big haired, gum cracking airheaded girlfriend of Mafia soldier
Other stereotypes include:
  • Overly emotional, overly dramatic
  • Superstitious
  • Hot blooded
  • Aggressive
  • Obsessed with food
  • Prone to vengeances over petty things
  • Males will be shown as being 'Italian Stallions'- muscular, good looking, tall dark and handsome, and major chick magnets.
More common stereotypes include:
  • Males will be sexually well endowed, but lack skills in the bedroom
  • Good at seducing women
  • Claim to be 'cousins' with one another
  • Claim to have a powerful/wealthy family member looking out for them
  • Loud tastes in clothing, accessories, etc
  • Wearing expensive looking jewelry made cheaply
  • Has the name Michael, Joe, Sal, Tony, etc
  • All talk and no bite
  • Braggers
  • Loud!! And talking too much and not knowing when to shut up!
  • Making for supposedly cruel and overly demanding bosses
Media Stereotypes
  • When the HBO show The Sopranos first premiered, it came under fire because it showed Italian memn and women as being part of the mob. It was said to stereotype Italians as being with the mob.
  • The 2009 show Jersey Shore also came under fire because it showed too many stereotypes and for being a reality show, it puts most Jersey-born people in a bad light, making it seem that all people from Jersey act that way, even though NONE of those people are from Jersey. It showed too many stereotypes, like the flirtatious exotic young women, the dramatic women, the hot blooded young guys, the 'Italian Stallion' good looks- tall, dark and handsome, muscular, good looks, oozing sex appeal.
  • Films, sometimes American films, often show Italians as being knife wielding, violent sociopathic gangsters or street fighting thugs
  • When it comes to movies about the Mafia, people if Italian descent almost always end up playing a Jewish-Italian or Irish-Italian mobster, and will strangely possess a heavy New York or New Jersey accent, even if they are not native New Yorkers or New Jersey-ites.
  • Sometimes movies about the mob glorify mob life. The glorify figures like John 'The Dapper Don' Gotti, and they make him out to be some kind of hero.
  • There is also a stereotype saying that all Italians look alike, with their dark features, such as brown eyes, dark brown/black hair, big noses, etc
