10 80s Metal Videos Considered Stupid by Today's Standards

For starters, we all know metal has come a long way. Gone are the Aqua Net-jacked hair, spandex, girlie makeup and neon clothes. Each metal band has an identity of its own. And certainly videos have come a long way as well. Here are ten videos that were considered cool in the 1980s but stupid today.

Thor - Anger (1983)

-Prior to blonde Aussie Chris Hemsworth taking on the role of the Norse god of thunder was the band Thor. The only Thor the world knew about was a heavily muscled bodybuilder-turned-heavy metal vocalist who could blow up hot water bottles until they blew. This video is straight Conan the Barbarian rip-off. There are kids dressed as hobbits running through the woods, sword fights with only half the effort, as if the people duelling aren't even trying, a guy in a fake beard pretending to be a Merlin-like wizard stroking a crystal ball in a manner that borders on erotic. It's even worse when the man who produced the video posted it on YouTube under the heading "The Worst Music Video Ever Made". It takes a lot of guts to be the director of a video to say that.

Candlemass - Bewitched (1986)

-Jonas Akerlund has gone down in metal history as the man behind the Metallica videos, Madonna videos and more. His break into music videos came thanks to a bordering on hilarious, low-cost video for doom metallers Candlemass. It starts out showing a heavyset Swedish man in a monk's cowl and hair that looks like a Brillo scrub pad busting out of a coffin and ending with a spot of dancing that would earn him a spot on the British program Strictly Come Dancing. A little bonus here is that future Mayhem singer Dead makes a cameo as one of the headbangers

Queensryche - Queen of the Reich (1985)

-Some say this is a thinking person's metal band. The video for this is Doctor Who meets Star Wars. It shows a "heroic" heavy metal band taking on villainesses clad in bikinis while being assaulted by rubber monsters so fake even they would have been thrown off the Star Trek set. Somehow, the band had high success after this

Savatage - Hall of the Mountain King (1987)

-1987 seen these power metal legends standing on a dark cliff. It was for their video "Hall of the Mountain King". The video showed a little person in a bald wig and gnome prosthetics wandering through an underground cave network looking for treasure. It makes you almost think this video was Dungeons & Dragons brought to life. The prize for completing this dangerous quest? A copy, on cassette, of Savatage's new album

Yngwie J Malmsteen - I'll See the Light Tonight (1985)

-It seems like the 80s were just jam packed with wizards, gnomes and other magical, mythical creatures. Ronnie James Dio would have been like a kid at Christmas with all of that. The promo for Swedish axe slinger Yngwie Malmsteen and his 1985 single "I'll See the Light Tonight" shows a wizard, gnome and more including an obviously paper mache dragon poking its head out of a pool. Not to mention the singer has hair that has seen better days

Nitro - Freight Train (1989)

-Talk about bad. A guitar with four necks that would baffle even an octopus. Voices that could shatter wine glasses. Some say grunge couldn't come fast enough.

Krokus - Screaming in the Night (1983)

-This video is horrible in every meaning of the word. The video consists of the band and their girlfriends getting kidnapped by angry tribesmen of unknown origin, the singer getting thrown into a coffin and locked away in a pyramid and to add to the insanity, a trap door opening and the singer coming out in a cafe walking over people's food. That couldn't be more horrible if it tried

Judas Priest - Hot Rocking (1981)

-You definitely didn't expect Judas Priest to have a real stinker of a video on here. How it got airplay on MTV is anyone's guess. It was partly a homo-erotic soft core porn movie mixed with a public safety announcement on the dangers of pyrotechnics. You could literally catch fire, as Rob Halford actually did

Samson - Biceps of Steel (1980)

-Prior to becoming known forever as Iron Maiden's vocalist and the nickname "The Air Raid Siren", Bruce Dickinson was treading the beer-sticky floors of pubs with his prior band Samson. Julian Temple, a famed director of videos, directed the video for the above-named song. The video shows tattooed bouncers fighting with a roadie in a bad wig and then having his hair cut off by a seductive woman a la the story of Samson and Delilah from The Bible. Luckily, Maiden never made any questionable videos.

Virgin Steele - Perfect Mansions (Mountains of the Sun) (2012)

-While this is not an 80s video, it's said this one is a real head scratcher. This video was filmed in 2011 for a reissue of an album by Long Island, New York metallers Virgin Steele that had debuted in 1988. It appears to have been shot in the afternoon on a 1990s-era video recorder. There's so much going on here: the cliche of middle aged dudes in too much black and leather rocking out; the not so needed jumps between random locations (a beach, a forest, someone's living room); a giant sword in the ground for no reason; The only thing stopping it from being the greatest metal video ever is no person pretending to be a gnome or wizard

2020: What a year!

Good grief! What a year this has been! The sooner it ends, the better!! I had a year to end all years, like most everyone on the planet!!

Had my first car accident

-It happened on 10/30/2020. I was on my way to work as a temp at Cincinnati Eye Institute. I was going along a stretch of road called Red Bank Road. The road, no matter the weather, is always slick because there are businesses along it with flower beds out front. These flower beds have automatic sprinklers in them to water them. I saw the street light turning yellow, which meant the red light was coming. Rather than run through it, I stopped, skidded and the car behind me rear ended me. Both me and the other driver were okay, but my bumper took a lick or two. It was somewhat hanging on. Of course, I had never been in that kind of situation before, so shock took over. I was scared and panicking. When the police showed, I told them the truth-I didn't want to run the red light, so I tried to stop, but the road was slick. I skidded and the car behind me was tailgating and rear ended me. I was able to make it to work, but I had to rely on rides from my mom to work and rides from either my mom or sister home from work until I could get a rental car, which I got early the following week. I have my car back now, bumper fixed and everything.

I do have a little fear of driving Red Bank Road now, but when I pass the scene where it happened, I take deep breaths. What's hilarious is that a police officer even told me that if it turns yellow, just go through it. The lights have a three second delay between yellow and red. You have exactly three seconds to get through the just-turned-red light to be safe. If the other lights turn green and your light is red and you run it, then the cops can get you. I've only been driving since I was 23 (I'm 30 now) and had a car for maybe 5 years. The officer was surprised that I'm 30 and only just had my first accident. He said he thinks I might be a safe driver for all this time to pass driving and only now have an accident. He told me to keep up the safe driving and that the other person was at fault for tailgating. He said that he and his other fellow District 2 police officers call Red Bank Road "Accident Alley" because of the high number of car crashes and wrecks, some of them fatal. Nowadays, I just take I-71 North to work because it's faster and less dangerous!

COVID-19

-This virus has robbed everyone of everything. People are dying senselessly because they refuse to take even the simplest precautions, like wearing a mask or using hand sanitizer. Sadly, the US is said to be one of the countries with the highest rate of infection and deaths. I swear, no one in the US seems to think it's good to wear masks. They think they know everything and yet we have the highest infection and death rate. Americans seem like spoiled toddlers who think they know everything. They think wearing a mask and taking precautions is a violation of their civil liberties, freedoms and rights. It's not. WEAR A MASK AND TAKE PRECAUTIONS! We'll never get over this unless people start following the rules!!! This virus has not only taken lives of both everyday people and musicians, it's taken jobs away from people, cancelled vacations, concerts, everything. People are getting furloughed then permanently laid off because of lack of work. That right there tells everyone why I got laid off from a local company called General Electric Credit Union. That's what happened to me. I had been working there as a Loan Processor since February 2020. I worked until March 31, until the CEO told us there might be layoffs due to COVID-19. I was on the chopping block. I was furloughed, thinking I was going to go back. NOPE! In early May, I received a letter saying something to the effect of "Due to mitigating circumstances, your employment with General Electric Credit Union will be terminated effective May 31, 2020". I was, in layman's terms, permanently laid off. After that, I relied heavily on unemployment while searching heavily for jobs. It took me six months just to get this temp job at Cincinnati Eye Institute, which will end sometime, but I don't know when. My manager told me I'm still employed here and she'll give me plenty of warning about my last day. But, besides that, everyone is in the same boat, struggling to find work, etc.

Concerts cancelled!

- I was supposed to go to two concerts this year. I was supposed to see The Who at BB&T Arena, the main arena on the campus of Northern Kentucky University, where their basketball team the Norse play. That got cancelled due to COVID-19. I was supposed to go see the Foo Fighters with my sister at Heritage Bank Arena, formerly US Bank Arena. That got pushed back to October of this year and then cancelled due to the virus.

Stepdad landed in hospital

-Thankfully, it wasn't COVID-19-related. He was having trouble breathing and was sent to the hospital. He ended up having his lungs filled with small blood clots. He spent three days in the local Christ Hospital. We had to take precautions when he came home because on the floor he was on, the doctors and nurses put extra COVID-19 patients there. He, of course and thankfully, was asymptomatic and does not have it. But he's now on blood thinners for the rest of his life. I thought we were going to lose him for a while. But he's still here, making us laugh and more!

Sometimes you just need a good laugh. And here's where ads come in to help. And not to mention these ads are a serious example of "You had one job..."

10 Biggest Control Freaks in Rock/Metal

We all know that some people in the world are control freaks. But a not so surprising thing is that a good majority of those control freaks are in music, wow! Go figure! Here are some of music's more notorious control freaks

1. Axl Rose
-Singer for Guns N' Roses
-And this is supposed to be a shocker?!?!?
-From the release of Guns N' Roses' 1987 album Appetite for Destruction to the 1991 twin releases of Use Your Illusion I & II, this rock and roll freight train didn't seem to have an end, until Axl pulled the brakes hard. He delayed or canceled gigs based on his mood at the time, which caused chaos in numerous ways, with disastrous results, including guitarist Izzy Stradlin quitting in disgust and fans pulling a riot in St. Louis
2. Lars Ulrich
-Drummer for Metallica
-The 2003 documentary Metallica: Some Kind of Monster seems to paint front man James Hetfield as a control freak of the highest order. But after watching this documentary, it's obvious who the real control freak is here: Denmark-born drummer Lars Ulrich. Some of the grievances in Metallica involving him include ordering Jason Newsted to turn his bass volume down on ...And Justice for All, insisting socks be put on his feet by his handlers, delivering the names of 300,000 Metallica fans to Napster headquarters as part of a massive legal suit he was having against them
3. Glenn Frey/Don Henley
-Songwriters/Co-lead singers of The Eagles
-In the documentary The History of The Eagles, the two songwriters don't even deny the fact that they like to be in control of every aspect of the band. During the Hell Freezes Over tour, Don Henley told Don Felder and fellow Eagles guitarist Joe Walsh that they were forbidden to dance on stage when they performed Henley's hit "All She Wants to Do is Dance".
4. Paul Stanley
-Rhythm guitarist/vocalist for KISS
-I like him, but I'm not surprised to see him on here
-Gene Simmons may be the outspoken member of KISS that angers everyone with his blunt opinions, but it's fellow KISS founder Paul Stanley that manages to ruffle a few feathers here and there. Just prior to the band's 2014 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Paul is said to be the man in charge for the band. Guitarist Ace Frehley and drummer Peter Criss said they wanted to play, but Stanley refused. He said they had left the band repeatedly, unhappy on each occasion and if KISS was to perform, it would be newer members Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer donning the makeup and costume of the Catman and Spaceman
5. Roger Waters
-Bass player for Pink Floyd
-He's not the founder of Pink Floyd, as a lot of people assume. Syd Barrett is the actual founder of the band. Waters gained control of the band and changed the sound of the music to the psychedelic-prog rock sound they are now known for, such as the 1979 album The Wall
6. Eddie Van Halen
-Co-founder and lead guitarist for Van Halen
-Judging from the fact that the band bears his last name and the last name of his brother, he seems to earn a right in deciding where the band goes. Flying high on the success of their 1984 album, these guys were a force to be reckoned with in the hard rock world. It was like a hard rock circus on steroids; out front was limber acrobat and singer David Lee Roth, brother Alex Van Halen thundering away on drums, quiet Michael Anthony adding thunderous bass lines. In 2006, Michael Anthony got booted from the band only to be replaced by Eddie's son Wolfgang. But, never fear: Michael Anthony is happy playing with Sammy Hagar in his band Chickenfoot
7. Billy Corgan
-Singer for The Smashing Pumpkins
-After launching the band in 1988, he says he led the band into success in the 1990s and says he played almost every instrument on their 1991 album Gish
8. Johnny Ramone
-Guitarist for The Ramones
-Trying to manage different personalities can be a daunting task (This is what it's probably like for KISS manager Doc McGhee). Johnny Ramone had this horrible task-managing different personalities. He had to control odd and OCD singer Joey Ramone, drug addicted bass player Dee Dee Ramone, and a revolving door of drummers dominated by Tommy Ramone and Marky Ramone.
9. John Fogerty
-Younger brother of Tom Fogerty, co-founder of Creedence Clearwater Revival
-From the get go, it was clear that the younger Fogerty brother ran this ship. The deep, bluesy southern rock sound they are known for came to life in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
10. Pete Townshend
-Lead guitarist for The Who
-He's the lead guitarist, chief songwriter and brains behind this band

Why the tattoo communities don't like tattoo shows

Yeah, as if you probably haven't noticed, there seems to be dozens of reality shows about our favorite form of expression- tattoos. Some seem real, others maybe not so much. Well, some actual tattoo artists think otherwise about these tattoo shows.
  1. Tattooing is a form of self expression and also called counter culture. But nowadays it's more consumer culture. Tattoos are not like the cheap junk you can buy at dollar stores and throw away when you're done with it. Tattoos are FOREVER!! That's what some people fail to realize when getting one. It's also a good thing to think about what you want to get, because once you get it, it's more expensive and painful to get it removed if you regret it
  2. There is a very rich, very vast history behind the art of tattooing. These shows have no idea about the rich history behind this and they also seem to have no interest in it
  3. They're trying to make money on something that was once the mark of sailors and criminals, but is now common and fashionable. That's often how people are identified in crimes, whether they are victim or suspect. Each tattoo is unique to that person with a personal message only that person knows
  4. Claim to be reality but are directed what to say
  5. They don't do their homework. They don't know much about the "tattoo community"
  6. Doesn't seem real. They seem to care more about $$$
  7. Artists are treated like fresh meals. They just shuffle through them like a wheel
  8. Artists aren't actors. Artists are the GENIUSES behind those lovely roses and crosses you see adorning people's bodies.
  9. Tattoo reality shows are overdone to death. There are so many tattoo shows on anymore-Miami Ink, NY Ink, Tattoo Rescue, etc.
  10. Unless you're getting a tattoo, watching it is boring. As a person who is now the proud owner of a tattoo, I had so much fun watching the artist do the tattoo on my arm. As soon as I can get a pic of it, I'll upload it and do a post on it. Which will probably be the next one or so. I would describe it but I don't want to ruin the surprise.
Also, as a side note, if anyone who reads this is thinking about getting a tattoo, they do not hurt. They sting, I'll admit that, but nothing more than a bad sunburn type of sting. But, the end result makes it sooooooooooooo worth it. It all comes down to how you handle pain. To be honest, I was sooooooooo deathly scared of getting my first tattoo; I wasn't sure what to expect. From living with my dad for the first 20 years of my life, he was afraid of needles and so was I, especially from all the times I freaked out about getting a shot in my arm. But the place I went to, One Shot Tattoo in Western Hills, Ohio, had great artists and I had my sister there for emotional support. Turns out that getting a tattoo doesn't hurt. The only thing that did hurt was my arm; it was soooooooo hot from the needle, lmao. And IDK what was wrong with me that night, but I must have been on speed or something. I didn't shut up once. My mouth was running a mile a second, lmao. But now I'm going to schedule my next tattoo this upcoming Saturday. It will be on my leg. It will be of a geisha girl holding a lacquered umbrella under a Japanese cherry blossom tree, with petals falling and Mount Fujiyama in the background. This, by far, will probably be my most detail-heavy and detail-oriented tattoo, but I am so looking forward to it!!!

Book Review: It's a Mod, Mod, Mod, Mod Murder

This is a book I found by accident. It takes place in my favorite decade of all time: the 1960s!! Specifically, America during the big "British Invasion" of the 1960s
Written by Rosemary Martin, It's a Mod, Mod, Mod, Mod Murder tells the story of Bebe Bennett, a woman from Richmond, Virginia, who works as secretary for Rip City Records, a fictitious music studio in New York City. Her manager, Bradley Williams, has just signed British rock band Philip Royal & the Beefeaters, a British band similar to The Beatles. She currently lives with Darlene Roland, a stewardess for an airline

Darlene has already familiarized herself with the lead singer of the band, Philip Royal, especially after she and him made themselves members of the Mile High Club. One day, when her and Bebe are supposed to double date with guys in the band, they go and find Philip murdered in his hotel room. He is found naked in a tub of water with his electric guitar in it and lyrics to one his songs, "Get Out of My Way" written on the wall.

Bebe and her friend Darlene are immediately considered suspects by Det. Finelli and Darlene is thus grounded from flying until this case is resolved. As they investigate, they meet other members of the band. Like Reggie Jones, the bassist, who unknown to all, is a father to a young boy with a wife. Keith Michaels, a guitarist, who is discovered to have a bit of a drinking problem and hot temper. Peter, the drummer, who has countless tie tacks he wears, which in his words "Ringo's got the rings, I got the tie tacks. Everyone needs a gimmick".

As they continue to investigate, more suspects come up, including Patty Gentry, a British reporter following the band, and a wannabe model named Astrid Loveday, who had previously dated Philip, but instead moved on to Peter so she could be close to him. The book finally ends with Bebe proving Darlene's innocence by proving that a member of Rip City Records named Vince Walsh was the one who killed him. The book ends with Darlene, Nigel, the band's manager and also member of the band, Reggie Jones, Keith Michaels, Peter, and Bebe checking out a new singer named Devon Woods, who's English, and also a man the band finally recruit for the new singer position

The book is full of cultural references and icons that were popular in that era. A lot of the references being in the 1960s, like references to musicians of that time, like Bob Dylan, the Beatles, Neil Diamond, etc. This book is perfect for any lover of 1960s culture, or 1960s Britain, like moi for example, lol!!!

Bret Michaels says he has nothing to say about his new song "Nothin' to Lose".
-There is a line in ther eabout Miley Cyrus "slowly get undressed". Now the pathetic teen pop singer is saying it's a controversy. The 46 year old Poison front man defended it to the fullest extent.  “the part where it says she slowly gets undressed, Miley says, ‘Yeah she does.’ It has no reference to her and I. It’s not even a duet… As God is my witness, there is nothing I have to be defensive about,” he says. “I’m a good Dad. I just thought it was a beautiful song. “
