-Green Day top UK charts with their punk rock album American Idiot

-Metallica's James Hetfield puts his restored black 1967 Chevy Camaro up for sale on eBay.
-Robert Palmer, best known for his sharp suits, sexy videos and being front man for the 80s band Power Station, dies in Paris, France, at age 54 from a heart attack.

1999
-Kenny Rogers announces he's putting his 360 acre Beaver Dam Farms estate in Georgia up for auction
-Deep Purple play London's Royal Albert hall accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra

1998
-Paul McCartney's daughter Mary McCartney marries Alastair Donald. Paul drives her to the church in Sussex, England

-The Grateful Dead unleash their new line of ties at a New York art gallery

-Southside Johnny films his video for "It's Been a Long Time" at Asbury Park, N.J.'s Stone Pony. And Bruce Springsteen and Stevie Van Zandt show up, along with Jon Bon Jovi. And the 4 Jersey-born musicians all jam together

-After being delayed for nearly a year, Mick Jagger's longform video for Running Out of Luck finally arrives in stores with very little notice.

-The Clash release their first single in America, I Fought the Law, which fails to chart

-John Lennon releases solo album Walls and Bridges. It features the song Whatever Gets You Through the Night and for 6 years, it becomes his only album of original material.

-Paul and Linda McCartney and Denny Laine of Wings return to England from Nigeria, where they decied to record Band on the Run

-John Lennon begins his recording sessions for what will become the John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band album
- According to Tamla-Motown, The Jackson 5 have sold 10 million singles in the time frame of 9 months.

-Bill Graham, a music promoter, opens up the Fillmore West in San Francisco. It quickly becomes the epicenter of the city's psychadelic-band boom
1968
-Rolling Stones guitarist Brian Jones is found guilty of possession of marijuana and is fined $150
-The Beatles record sound effects for use on Glass Onion, but are never used

1965
-Queen Elizabeth II awards the Beatles the Order of the British Empire. John Lennon later returns his to protest poor sales of "Cold Turkey", and many WWII veterans return their Medals of Honor in disgust that 4 long haired musicians get such an honor

-At #1 on the singles chart is Roy Orbison's Pretty Woman
-The Kinks release their single You Really Got Me, which becomes their first American hit and goes to #7

-Tracey Thorn, member of the band Everything But the Girl is born

-Bob Dylan gets a steady gig. He spends next 2 weeks at Gerde's Folk City in New York's Greenwich Village.

-In Tupelo, Miss., today is declared Elvis Presley Day
-Fats Domino enters the charts with Blueberry Hill which goes to #2
