Plot
-Lloyd Christmas(Jim Carrey) is a simple minded limo driver who lives in Providence, Rhode Island with his best friend Harry Dunne(Jeff Daniels) who is a part time self employed pet groomer who drives a van converted into a shaggy dog. They plan on opening a pet store called I Got Worms, that specializes in selling worm farms, but due to lack of funds, they are stuck working dead end jobs.
-One day, Lloyd develops a crush on a client he has to drive to the airport, a woman named Mary Swanson(Lauren Holly). She intentionally leaves a briefcase in the airport for some thugs to pick up. Lloyd, completely ignorant of the situation, rushes in to grab it, hoping to get it to her on time, but ends up falling off the tunnel that leads to the airplane. Later on, Lloyd convinces Harry to break out of their boring lives and drive to Aspen to find Mary. On their trail are 2 thugs, Joe "Mental" Mentalino(Mike Starr) and J.P. Shay(Karen Duffy), who both see Lloyd grab the briefcase. On the way, they run into several mistakes, though they manage to escape out of them; a tough redneck named Sea Bass(Cam Neely) bullies Harry and attempts to sexually assault Lloyd, a motorcycle cop(Harland Williams) pulls over the van to cite them for alcohol but accidentally drinks urine in a bottle, Joe managing to hitch a ride with Lloyd and Harry and is intent on killing them with rat poison to get the briefcase, but ends up eating the pills himself when Harry mistakenly feeds them to him, and finally approaching the Colorado border, Lloyd mistakenly re-enters the interstate headed eastbound while Harry sleeps. They argue and later on they make amends by trading in the van for a scooter.
-They head to Aspen, but once there, they can't find Mary. The 2 fight in a park and they finally find out that in the briefcase is money. They check into a luxury hotel and buy a Lamborghini Diablo, promising to return the money in the form of I.O.Us. They finally find Mary by attending a community function to benefit Snowy Owls, with Lloyd planning on asking Mary out on a date. Because of his stupidity, Mary becomes attracted to Harry instead. They make plans for the next day and Harry unfortunately tells Lloyd that she will be waiting for him in a bar. The next day, Harry and Mary go skiing while Lloyd is left waiting for 3 hours in a bar. When he discovers what is going on, a vengeful Lloyd gives Harry tea laced with laxatives and he meets Mary at her house. They head for the suite where they have the suitcase and they are greeted by the mastermind of the ransom, Nicholas Andre(Charles Rocket) who is a confidant of the Swanson family. He holds them at gunpoint upon finding the money gone. Harry returns, but is taken hostage.
-The FBI arrive in the nick of time with Beth Jordan(Victoria Rowell), a woman Harry met at a gas station, leading the way as an undercover agent. Mary is reunited with her kidnapped husband with Lloyd heartbroken and Harry looking on. The final scene in the movie shows them walking the road back home when a busload of bikini-clad Hawaiian Tropic girls pull up, saying they are looking for someone to oil them up. The bus drives on, and they argue about the rules of a tag game.
