Richard Hammond shares story of famous 2006 crash

For anyone and everyone familiar with the British motoring television program Top Gear, it was well covered in the news that, in 2006, one of the hosts of the program, Richard Hammond, was severely injured while test running a jet engine-powered car at an airstrip in York. This is well documented from both his point of view and his wife Mindy's point of view in the excellent book On The Edge: My Story.

Host Richard Hammond talks about the 2006 crash that nearly took his life.

Shared as part of a YouTube channel called DriveTribe, which was founded by him, Jeremy Clarkson and James May, Richard Hammond recounts what happened that fateful day in September 2006. At the time, he was testing a jet engine-powered car called Vampire at the RAF Elvingdon airbase near York. It was related to filming for Top Gear. The car reached 320 mph. Despite sustaining severe injuries, he was able to return to Top Gear in 2007

As part of a video on the DriveTribe channel, Richard Hammond shares what happened. The video was filmed in the Lake District and he recounted what could have been his final moments. "In hospital, in intensive care, things were apparently not looking very good, but I didn't know, there was a lot of morphine floating around my system. I finally woke and I shared with my wife Mindy a dream I'd been having. A really, really vivid one, probably, partly, on a count of the morphine. And in my mind I'd been walking these hills here in the Lake District, overlooking Buttermere. I was having a lovely time strolling along and gradually I got a growing sense of you know when you're in trouble. (It) grew and grew until eventually in my dream I turned back, I didn't walk around this tree and carry on and then I woke."

When he woke up and told his wife, Mindy, who is a newspaper columnist, about the dream, she told him what was going on in the hospital room at the time. He said "She'd been called into the intensive care and been told 'Mrs. Hammond I'm really sorry things aren't looking good.'"

"I was on full life support and breathing apparatus, she was told it's not looking good we think we're going to lose him." His wife asked if shouting at him would work. "Apparently she roared and screamed and swore at me 'don't you dare die' and that's when I turned back from this tree in my dream and that's when I woke. My last thought took me somewhere I love and somewhere I'm happy. So I'm not scared of this old tree. I pass it regularly, most months I come up here and walk, and every time I pass it, I do feel comforted."

"I know it's where I'll go. It's still here and I'm still here. But it does speak of the importance of place and the joy of being connected with a place." When the video went viral, Richard Hammond appeared on BBC Radio 4's program where Evan Davis asked why he came out with this personal story, 16 years later. "It's not often you get to be really personal and share quite an intimate story I suppose, but I hoped it would connect with people. It was a big thing in my life and because it's about a brain injury, that affects a lot of people. If it connects with anybody, it's worth telling."

Izzy Hammond Makes Restaurant Laugh After Comment

Izzy Hammond is the daughter of Top Gear UK presenter Richard Hammond. She managed to get a whole restaurant laughing with her comment when, not long after the show ended, both Richard and James were paying for food at a restaurant. Izzy said "Well technically lads, I should pay as you haven't got a job between you."

When Richard Hammond left the BBC program Top Gear in 2015, his own daughter Izzy made some sarcastic comments about his financial future. In March 2015, an altercation between Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson and a producer occurred, involving a cold steak being served to him the day after filming. Clarkson was let go from BBC as a result of the altercation. He had punched producer Oisin Tymon. The producer took him to court and as a result, received £100,000 from Clarkson. In the aftermath of the altercation, fellow presenters James May and Richard Hammond left, stating that they "come as a package". They then started their new, Amazon-based program The Grand Tour

During an interview related to the altercation, Hammond talked about the financial worries and the hilarious comments his daughter made. During an interview on the Fuelling Around podcast, Richard Hammond said "After we'd finished the show James had come over to stay with me for a few days. We'd gone to Kentucky Fried Chicken to get lunch for everyone with Izzy. We got to the front of the queue, put our order in, and James said 'Oh, oh, I'll pay' and I said 'no, no mate, I'll pay' and he said 'no, no, I'll pay'. And then there was a pause, just when the whole restaurant had gone quiet, and Izzy said 'Well technically lads, I should pay as you haven't got a job between you.' And the place detonated with laughter. She obviously then thought 'This is the best game'.

So subsequently, at the end of the queue in Morrisons, I'm home so I was doing the shopping, as I was waiting to pay she would say very loudly 'Daddy, daddy, so when does your credit card stop working?' and I'd go 'Oh, for God's sake,' and again a whole store of people were in hysterics."

"Guilty Pleasures"

Have you ever noticed that some people have those "guilty pleasures"? You know, those things they can't live without? Well, I have alot!!!!

Here is a new guilty pleasure I have:

-Been listening to Twisted Sister alot. Thanks to my sister, lol. For those who don't know who these guys are, they are a heavy metal band from Long Island, New York

My sister likes the one in the middle, in pink. Dee Snider

-Wallace and Gromit. Biggest guilty pleasure ever!!

I hear it took 5 years to make the Wallace and Gromit movie

-Music. Need it to survive, lol. If I don't have music playing somewhere, I go bonkers!! I need music, lol!!
-Puzzles. Right now, I'm assembling a puzzle of The Beatles Abbey Road album. Have yet to find the rest of Ringo Starr and John Lennon. Still working on it...
-Far Side Gallery by Gary Larson. When I need a good laugh, I read this. Makes me feel better. It worked real well after my dad died. I needed something to get my mind off of things, so I read this
-Castle. It's my new fave cop show.
-Top Gear. Never get tired of this! It's always good for a laugh to feel better. Because they say laughing is the best medicine

These 3 argue about something almost all the time, and it's funny. Like on one episode, Jeremy and James kept saying that Hammond was American because he owned a Mustang car.
-Stuffed animals. Always hug one to feel better.

Cute lil moose. Got enough of these in my room; it seems like other than bears, I have more moose and reindeer than any other animal!
