People either love squirrels or hate squirrels. These adorable little critters always make an appearance in gardens, especially if bird feeders are present. They are highly intelligent, but also goofy at the same time. Their antics make one giggle. According to MSN.com writer Shaunacy Ferro, here are 16 nutty facts about our furry friends of the forest in honor of National Squirrel Appreciation Day, which is on January 21 of every year

1. Squirrels are amazing jumpers

-These little critters can really jump. According to a study done by researchers at the National University of Singapore, plantain squirrels can jump more than 8 feet from a tree stump to a feeding area. Flying squirrels can travel farther, because of the flap of skin between their hands and feet, acting as a sort of sail, allowing them to glide

2. Squirrels are organized

-A study done in 2017 found that squirrels are more organized than most humans. They store nuts based on type. They were given a mix of nuts consisting of walnuts, pecans, almonds and hazelnuts and the squirrels used in the study took time to place each nut type in its own spot. It may have even been discovered that they separate nuts based on size

3. Squirrels can be forgetful, and it's their forgetfulness that helps grow new trees

-Tree squirrels are extremely important for the growth of new trees. While they take care to plant nuts in specific spots, they will tend to forget where they buried them from time to time. This forgetfulness has an important result-new trees. The acorns they bury result in new oak trees growing and more acorns for squirrels

4. Squirrels help truffles grow

-Truffles are a type of mushroom that grows underground. Unlike other mushrooms who spread spores through the air, truffles spread their spores through animals picking up the spores and carrying them and eventually depositing the spores elsewhere. Most squirrels eat truffles and when they relieve themselves, the spores come out on to the forest floor and start growing

6. Several towns are battling it out for "Home of the White Squirrel"

-White squirrels are pretty rare, as are black squirrels. Squirrels tend to be a popular mascot for a lot of towns. There are various cities fighting to be known as the "Home of the White Squirrel." Those cities include Brevard, North Carolina, Kenton, Tennessee, Marionville, Missouri, Exeter, Ontario, Canada. Olney, Illinois is the city with the highest population of white squirrels. Local law states it's at least a $750 fine from the local police for killing one of these furry critters. They even have the legal right of way on roads. Even the city keeps a census on the creature. 7. Squirrels could aid in research for strokes

-It might sound like something out of a fantasy, but it's becoming a reality. Since ground squirrels hibernate in the winter, and their brain functions during that time, scientists have been using this as a research to form new drugs to reduce the brain damage caused by strokes. When ground squirrels hibernate, they can lower their body temperature to as low as 26.7 degrees Fahrenheit. During this period, squirrels' brains undergo cellular changes to help adjust with reduced blood flow. Scientists are researching drugs that could mimic that process, only in the human brain, preventing cells from death when blood flow to the brain is reduced during strokes

8. Squirrel fur might have been how leprosy was spread in the Middle Ages

-In the 9th century, it was thought squirrels spread leprosy. Scientists believe that Vikings, who often had squirrel furs, helped unintentionally introduce the disease into other parts of Europe

9. Squirrels can do more damage than hackers

-There is a website called Cyber Squirrel 1 that documents every record of a squirrel or other animals causing mayhem to power services. This site goes back as far as 1987. -Scientists look at the local squirrel population to determine if a forest is healthy. Forests depend on seeds, spores and more to grow and support a good ecosystem. Dwindling squirrel populations tell scientists that there is something wrong, whether it be logging, fires or other forest-changing events

12. Squirrels are liars

-Gray squirrels can deceive both humans and other squirrels. When burying their food, they will keep an eye on the area, and "pretend" to bury something and then pat the dirt down. This fools other squirrels into thinking there is food there, when there is really nothing. The squirrel will actually have the food in its mouth to bury in another spot. It's called tactical deception

13. Squirrels were once America's most popular choice of pet

-Most states require a permit to keep squirrels as pets, since they are wild animals. Once upon a time, it was commonplace to have a squirrel as a pet. Warren G. Harding, one of the Presidents of the United States, kept a squirrel named Pete. He would bring Pete to White House meetings, where members of the cabinet would bring nuts. Pet squirrel ownership has dwindled due to exotic animal laws

14. Just one squirrel can attract more squirrels

-In the 1800s, American cities rarely saw wildlife. In the summer of 1856, a gray squirrel escaped from its cage inside a New York apartment and earned a write up in The New York Times. The paper's article stated several hundred people gathered to stare at the tree where the squirrel was located and they tried to entice it down. It took a police officer to disperse the crowd. Unfortunately, the fate of the squirrel was not mentioned

15. Squirrels were used to teach compassion in the 19th century

-The mid-1800s seen squirrels being introduced into city parks. It was a chance for city dwellers to witness wild life at its most unique. It also taught young boys a lesson. Observing / feeding wild squirrels was seen as a way of turning boys away from cruelty. Ernest Thompson Seton, founder of the Boy Scouts, said in a 1914 article that cities should have "missionary squirrels" for boys to learn how to befriend them. He thought this was a great way to have boys learn compassion and sympathy. Feeding squirrels was also considered an act of charity. It was thought that, even if you couldn't provide charity for a human being, providing charity for the squirrels was a good way to give back

16. Squirrels hate tax season too

-Not present in big cities, most of the US was once overrun with squirrels. In Ohio, the main breed of squirrel is Eastern Gray Squirrel. Once there was such a large population of squirrels that they caused farmers to want to hunt them to reduce the numbers. 1807 seen the Ohio General Assembly adding squirrel bodies on top of their taxes. Taxpayers had to submit a minimum of 10 squirrel pelts to the town clerk a year. 

Mistakes to Avoid When Traveling Alone

It can be a daunting concept, traveling alone. No one to talk to but yourself. But the pros often far outweigh the cons to traveling alone. Travel + Leisure has come up with a few handy tips on traveling alone.

1. Don't overpack

-Only pack what you need. So that you don't strain your body lifting or moving a large suitcase. Only pack what you need for that trip. If you're going to be doing a lot of walking or hiking, comfortable shoes are a plus. If you plan on going sightseeing and want to take pictures, bring a camera. If it's a digital camera, bring a charger and a universal adapter to charge it

2. Don't schedule something for every minute

-The whole point of traveling is to see a new region of the world, to see how the locals live their lives. While it's tempting to fill every minute of every day you're in a new region of the world, don't overschedule every minute. Leave yourself some breathing room to relax. Delays will happen, travelling to places can take longer than expected, sometimes things go wrong. Take a little time for yourself by unwinding at a spa, enjoying a meal at a cafe, take in a museum. Just like you checklist your luggage, checklist what you want to do prior to departure

3. Always have a plan B

-Things will go wrong. You can't avoid it. That's why it's incredibly important to have a plan B. A backup plan. This plan will avoid issues like cancelled reservations or destinations that seemed impressive initially, but in the end were disappointing. Make sure you are aware of other hotels nearby in case of cancelled reservations

4. Never underestimate travel costs

-It's costly to travel. Especially travel to countries where there are no all inclusives (mostly found in the tropical regions, these types of resorts are where everything is paid for, you only bring money for tips and souvenirs). It's good to know how much your trip will cost. Figure in costs for sightseeing, food and drink, souvenirs, hotels, etc. Make a budget plan to know how much to bring with you and add some extra as a buffer against pitfalls

5. Don't be afraid to splurge a little

-We all work hard. We all deserve to splurge a little. That's not to say spend a fortune on something. Just make it something simple. Something like a spa day. Reserve a spot at a restaurant you've wanted to try. Make it something you'll remember

6. Don't feel an obligation to fill silence

-Traveling alone can be frightening for some people, especially those who are introverted, or have a shy personality. Silence is indeed golden. Remember, you don't have to interact with everyone you meet on your solo trip. You're not obligated to go on group tours. Self-guided tours and one-on-one experiences are allowed to be had. Sometimes, these solo trips are good self-discovery journeys just waiting to happen

7. Never fear making new friends

-Anytime you go outside your home country, friendship is waiting just around the corner. Never fear making new friends. It's always a rewarding experience to make new friends from a culture that differs from your own. Group tours and hostels offer the easiest way to make new friends. Hotel happy hours are another way of making new friends. When you become friends with someone new, keep connected with them via social media, such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc. There's even an app called Bumble, which has a "just friends" filter, allowing you to form bonds with people who are also looking to meet new people from all over the world

8. Tell people where you are going

-In case of an emergency, it's imperative that someone knows where you're going. Share your travel plans with a trusted family member or friend. Make an itinerary for them with all of the information they'll need, such as hotel phone number, hotel name, etc. Update them when you change something. It's imperative to put personal security as the number one priority

9. Don't forget those once in a lifetime experiences

-Some experiences can make you feel as if they were tailor made for couples or groups. Don't let that stop you. If your dream has been to stay in an overwater bungalow in a tropical destination, book it. Do you have a favorite musician who just so happens to be doing a residency in Las Vegas? Buy a ticket and get accommodations. Want to go to Walt Disney World by yourself? Go for it. Buy those tickets and get that hotel and enjoy the happiest place on Earth. You don't need permission from someone. Life is too short to worry about the small stuff

10. Never second guess yourself

-One thing that can always be trusted is your gut instinct, your intuition. If something doesn't feel right, odds are high that it probably isn't. Always trust your gut instinct. You can also follow your intuition on good things. If a restaurant looks interesting to you, but is not one of those five star Michelin-rated restaurants, it's fine. You might have found a hidden gem no one else knows about. There are restaurants called holes in the wall that are often the best places to go. They are off of the beaten path and they, more often than not, have the best food. Trust your instincts. Do not second guess yourself. Life is too short for second guessing

American Tourists Love Visiting Britain

According to Microsoft channel The Telegraph UK, here are things American tourists love about Britain. Some are completely taken with the beauty of places like the Lake District, the quaint villages, the interesting markets held on weekends and more.

Earlier in the month, a writer named Sara Sherwood wrote an article that said American tourists found the UK "bland" and "barbaric". Complaining about everything, from the "stiff upper lip" mindset to the supposed inability to produce cold water. But asides from the crybabies who complain about this little historic region of the world, there are other Americans who are completely taken with everything this region has to offer.

There is more to the UK than the famous sites of London

-A reader, Graham Kirsch, shared a story of meeting a couple from South Carolina, who were on vacation, or holiday, as it's referred to in the UK. He explained "They had an interest in history and industrial heritage, so were visiting Cromford Mills in Derbyshire. They were knowledgeable, polite, interested and interesting. Plus, they understood that there is much more to the UK than just a few famous sites in London."

I have yet to find any pubs in the US that come close to the average British one

-A reader of Telegraph UK named Jonathan Lloyd states an expansion on the point made by Mr. Kirsch. He said "As an expat and dual citizen who has lived in the US for 45 years, I always tell my American friends to pick a few things they want to see in London, but then get on a train and go two hours in any direction (Bath, Brighton, Norfolk, Oxford) and visit the local area around those places. "As for pubs, I have yet to find any in the US that come close to an average British pub. I can think of five in Hertford that would put most US bars to shame."

Keep doing what you're doing my British friends

-Telegraph UK reader Rich Coo shared how, as an American citizen in his late 30s, the description of Britain being "bland" and "barbaric" "pains him a bit to read". He said "I've been to the UK many, many times for work and holiday. I love the country and have gained some really close friends there. Nothing beats sitting in a proper pub with real ale in hand. Don't change, keep doing what you're doing by British friends."

It saddens me to hear of the rampant illegal immigration

-Jenny Stewart, a reader of Telegraph, states "I am American and, as with most Americans I know, share a heritage with the UK. We love everything-well, nearly everything-about Britain." She goes on to say that it "saddens me to hear of the rampant illegal immigration; the undermining of your churches and culture; the high taxes trying to pay for it all. The United Kingdom is special. Protect it."

Americans go to the UK because they expect it to be different

-Laura McIntyre, a Telegraph reader, is another American citizen who visits the UK on a regular basis. She stated "Americans go to the UK because they expect it to be different than home, so why complain when they find that it is, indeed, different? That's silly."

If folks from the American heartland visited the British heartland they'd have a whale of a time

-An anonymous reader posted an interesting point. They stated that "the issue is the cost of travelling across the Atlantic, which means only elite Americans generally come here and it's London they visit, which clearly has its flaws. If the regular folks from the American heartland came here and visited the British heartland then I'm sure they'd have a whale of a time."

We are complete Anglophiles

-Sarah Ferrar, a reader of Telegraph UK, says she remembers a trip she took in the 1970s with her mother. "When I was 20 years old, my mother and I flew into Heathrow, rented an automobile and immediately left London and spent several weeks travelling around the British Isles - going up as far as Skye and far down as Bath. It was just lovely. In 2000, one of my daughters and I retraced that trip, although a bit modified. We are complete Anglophiles."

The weather is not a problem

The pubs are perfect for a nice glass of wine and a bite to eat. The weather is the weather and not a problem. My accommodations are comfortable, the Tube and buses get me wherever I need to go. England will always be my second home

Izzy Hammond Makes Restaurant Laugh After Comment

Izzy Hammond is the daughter of Top Gear UK presenter Richard Hammond. She managed to get a whole restaurant laughing with her comment when, not long after the show ended, both Richard and James were paying for food at a restaurant. Izzy said "Well technically lads, I should pay as you haven't got a job between you."

When Richard Hammond left the BBC program Top Gear in 2015, his own daughter Izzy made some sarcastic comments about his financial future. In March 2015, an altercation between Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson and a producer occurred, involving a cold steak being served to him the day after filming. Clarkson was let go from BBC as a result of the altercation. He had punched producer Oisin Tymon. The producer took him to court and as a result, received £100,000 from Clarkson. In the aftermath of the altercation, fellow presenters James May and Richard Hammond left, stating that they "come as a package". They then started their new, Amazon-based program The Grand Tour

During an interview related to the altercation, Hammond talked about the financial worries and the hilarious comments his daughter made. During an interview on the Fuelling Around podcast, Richard Hammond said "After we'd finished the show James had come over to stay with me for a few days. We'd gone to Kentucky Fried Chicken to get lunch for everyone with Izzy. We got to the front of the queue, put our order in, and James said 'Oh, oh, I'll pay' and I said 'no, no mate, I'll pay' and he said 'no, no, I'll pay'. And then there was a pause, just when the whole restaurant had gone quiet, and Izzy said 'Well technically lads, I should pay as you haven't got a job between you.' And the place detonated with laughter. She obviously then thought 'This is the best game'.

So subsequently, at the end of the queue in Morrisons, I'm home so I was doing the shopping, as I was waiting to pay she would say very loudly 'Daddy, daddy, so when does your credit card stop working?' and I'd go 'Oh, for God's sake,' and again a whole store of people were in hysterics."

That Metal Show Top Moments

For those of us who had the luck of having VH1 Classic as a channel on TV, we could watch That Metal Show, a show about three experts in music (two of which are also stand up comedians) interview their favorite musicians. The people at Loudwire.com have compiled a list of the Top 10 Awesome That Metal Show Moments.

For those not familiar with this show, That Metal Show centers around music expert Eddie Trunk and his two co-hosts, Don Jamieson and Jim Florentine, both of whom are fellow music experts and stand up comedians who often infuse their comedy with music references. This show centers around interviewing musicians. This show features "That Metal Show Top Five", which involves the three hosts choosing their own top 5 lists and then combine those together to create the TMS Top 5. Then there's "Stump the Trunk", which involves either musicians themselves or guests in the audience asking Eddie Trunk questions. If he gets them wrong, they win a prize. Miss Jennifer, the attractive blonde who appears on set, will be the one to bring a box labeled "Eddie Trunk's Box of Junk" and inside will be something music-related, such as a DVD on a band, a CD of a new band, a book, etc. Other skits included "The Throw Down" where people would pick a topic and debate it. There's also the "TMS Pick of the Week", where one of the hosts would choose a book, CD, DVD to highlight and give it publicity. Ironically enough, on the episode of That Metal Show with Rick Allen of Def Leppard, the TMS Pick of the Week was Iron Man: My Journey Through Heaven and Hell with Black Sabbath by Tony Iommi. I have that book and have read it numerous times.

-Musicians are human beings. They have the same frailties as we regular people do. That also includes medical issues. The iconic front man for Mercyful Fate tells the story of how he underwent a triple bypass surgery on his heart and how he returned to the stage after recovering. Heart surgery is hard on anyone. It's even harder on someone who is in a physically taxing career, like music, which involves running around on stage

6. Steve Harris and refusing to conform to label pressure

-Iron Maiden are known for their steadfast refusal to compromise their music to the tastes of popular demand. They are known for being who they are, doing straight metal and not changing to pop, light rock or other genres. Monty Python actor Eric Idle has recently set up the Bright Side Fund to aid with Stand Up to Cancer to aid in promoting early detection of cancer. Idle hopes that his early detection of pancreatic cancer will inspire others to get themselves checked out. Statistics show that the five year survival rate for people with pancreatic cancer is around 11%, but Idle hopes to change that. "I think we can make a difference. The good news is that we are starting to fight back."

In connection with Stand Up to Cancer, Eric Idle had set up the Bright Side Fund to promote research and early detection. In his interview with People Magazine, he said "They're doing great work. I think if we can spread the word a little and try and raise some money, we can put it in the right direction." He recently appeared on the music television show The Masked Singer. Thanks to early detection, he was able to catch his cancer very early on. "My doctor specializes in preventative medicine, and he makes me go for blood tests every year. He noticed a difference in the markers from the previous year, so he ordered an MRI and asked them to add contrast. That lit up the pancreas, and there it was." He talked about the surgery related to it. "It was a partly robotic five hour surgery. I had a fantastic surgeon...and he cut it all out because it wasn't attached to anything; it was intact. The technicians had never seen it in that state before because they'd never seen it that early. A lot of the research is studying early warning signs."

When Idle had gotten the all clear, he said "I cried. You can resign to whatever fate you're in. You put yourself in the hands of the doctors, and off you go. You keep smiling and whistle and then look on the bright side. And then when they tell you that you're going to survive, I mean, that was quite a moment." The actor gives credit to his wife Tania, son Carey and daughter Lily for their strong love and encouragement. "They rallied around me. We had to move quick, and we did. There was no time to lose." Since the news of his cancer battle came out, there has been an outpouring of love and support from all over. "I wanted to be honest and come out about the cancer and encourage people because this is very good news. I got extraordinary responses from people."

He is looking ahead. "I'm a father, so I really enjoy my kids, and I love seeing them. I don't look very far in advance. I'm a writer, so I tend to get up and start early on whatever problems I've set myself. And that's a good way of avoiding any anxiety. You just spend your time trying to solve them."
