Early Life and Career
-Born to Peter Townshend, a British professional golfer and Lorna Townshend, an Irish model
-Attended the Gaiety School of Acting in Dublin where he made his stage debut in the 1993 school production of Colin Teevan's Tear Up the Black Sail. His professional stage debut came in 1994 in the play True Lines.
-His early film roles were "Godsuit" and "Summertime". He landed a leading role in the 1997 British film Shooting Fish.
-He started appealing to American audiences after his work in the movie About Adam. His big breaks came in the forms of Count Lestat de Lioncourt in Queen of the Damned and as Dorian Gray in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
-Was the original choice to play Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, but was replaced by Viggo Mortensen
-In 2005, starred alongside Gabrielle Union in Night Stalker, a remake of the 1974 ABC series Kolchak: The Night Stalker. He plays Carl Kolchak, an investigative reporter looking into his wife's murder.

-Started dating Charlize Theron on the set of 2002's Trapped. They lived together in Los Angeles and England. They considered themselves married. He said "We didn't have a ceremony. I don't need a certificate or the state or the church to say otherwise. So there's no big official story on a wedding, but we are married... I consider her my wife and she considers me her husband."
-She split from him in January 2010 after returning from Mexico
