6 tips for sleeping well on a plane

This is sometimes easy, sometimes hard. When you have crying babies, you can't control that no more than the parents can. The parents know their babies' ears are popping and they are trying to soothe them as much as possible. In addition to crying babies, you have the roar of the engines and/or your neighbor's reading light. Here are 6 tips to sleeping well on an airplane.

1. Upgrade!

-Avoiding coach is a good idea. It might save you $$$ to fly coach, but it won't save you on stress. Everyone travels coach and I mean EVERYONE! People with babies fly coach, so you'll be enduring the crying of babies. Upgrading can be as simple as moving to a premium economy seat or moving to the aisle seat

2. Take the redeye

-These are the cheapest flights in terms of points for travel and dollars. You'll have more time on your vacation and you'll feel less stressed and more relaxed because the flights are usually in the evening

3. Noise cancelling headphones are a must

-These handy little devices will kill all noise around you. You won't be hearing the baby crying several rows back, the roar of the engine or your seat mate talking about the time he got into a drunken fight in a bar. Noise cancelling headphones can be pricey, depending on the brand. They will set you back $100+, but it's often worth the investment

4. Avoid alcohol at all costs

-Alcohol is a dehydrator, meaning you get thirsty when you drink a lot. It sounds ironic that alcohol is a liquid but also dehydrates you. It's true. Large quantities of alcohol have been shown to disrupt your normal sleep cycle

5. Watch what you eat

-You don't want to eat anything that is going to be acidic or cause digestion issues. Eat fruits such as cherries, bananas, pineapples or oranges because they contain melatonin, which is the hormone that induces sleep or eat turkey or chicken sandwiches, peanut butter, cheese crackers, nuts, cereal or sugar free cereal

6. Buckle up

-It might not sound like it would work, but it will save you zzz's and trouble when the flight attendants tell everyone to buckle their seatbelt
