He gained alot of attention in the 1990s by playing the role of Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice, which was a made for TV version. In 2011, he received an Academy Award for playing King George VI in The King's Speech. Also in that same year, he recieved a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Early Life
His mother, Shirley Jean, was a religious lecturer at what is now University of Winchester, abnd his father, David Norman Lewis Firth was a history teacher at the University of Winchester and also an education officer for the Nigerian Government. He has a sister, Kate and a brother, Jonathan, who is also an actor. His parents were raised in India, because they were missionaries there and Firth also spent some time in Nigeria when he was a child because his father was teaching there. He lived in St. Louis, Missouri when he was 11, and attended King's School in Winchester, Hampshire later on. Then later on he attended the Drama Centre London.
Career

In 1983, he starred as Guy Bennett in the stage production of Another Country. In 1984, he got his first film debut in the screen adaptation of the play. It was until 1995, when he starred in the BBC TV adaptation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice that he became beter known. In that TV movie, he played Mr. Darcy. From that movie, he became somewhat of a heartthrob because of a scene where he emerges in a wet shirt after a swim. He also starred in the 2 movies Bridget Jones' Diary and Bridget Jones' Edge of Reason, where he played Bridget's object of affection. In 2003 he starred alongside Amanda Bynes in What a Girl Wants. In that movie, he plays a high profile politician running for office named Lord Henry Dashwood, and he doesn't even know he has a daughter because she was sent away because she was deemed unsuitable. In 2004, he starred as the host of Saturday Night Live the same night that Norah Jones was singing on the show.

He is currently married to Italian film producer/director Livia Giuggioli. They both have 2 sons, Luca and ?Matteo. He is also fluent in Italian and they have a house in London and Italy.
