In Trouble Again: The Rolling Stones are Banned From the Ed Sullivan Show

Rock Music History

On Oct. 25, 1964, this was their first ever scheduled appearance on the fmaily variety show the Ed Sullivan Show. During the 1960s, he was known for having every British Invasion band play on his show. Because earlier in the year, he had The Beatles followed by the Dave Clark Five. When they Stones got their time in the limelight, they were going to play a couple songs from their '12 X 5' album, "Time is On My Side" and "Around and Around". Sullivan had tried to quiet the screaming girls in the audience, but he couldn't, so essentially The Stones got banned, but it would not last.

These guys were loved by all the young ones and hated by all the parents. The show received several complaints including a telegram that read: ” (You) Should be ashamed of yourself putting on such trash as the Rolling Stones. A Disappointed Viewer. Claude Lopez.”

But that did not stop Sullivan, who had the band on several more times over the years
