-Producer Jack Nitzsche dies in L.A. As well as working with Neil Young, and the Rolling Stones, he won an Oscar for co-writing the song Up Where We Belong from the 1982 movie An Officer and a Gentleman

-Lionel Richie performs a gig in front of the Sphinx
- Motley Crue's Nikki Sixx is charged with breach of peace after he tells a Las Vegas audience they should turn over some cars
-Christie Brinkley's marriage is over with singer Billy Joel. They divorce
-Jimmy Buffett's plane turns over following a takeoff from Nantucket. He escapes and swims to safety

- Simon LeBon, singer for Duran Duran, and his  wife Yasmin become parents to daughter Amber Rose

-Jazz performer Stan Kenton dies in Hollywood's Midway at 67.

-Elton John is back at the Troubadour club to play 3 benefit concerts. These concerts raise money for the Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA

-The Faces play what they say is their last British concert.

-Elton John plays his 1st American concert at L.A.'s Troubadour, where he is booked for an entire week. The singer would strike fame in America before he became a star in his British homeland

- The Beatles study transcendental meditation with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi at a Spiritual Regeneration League conference in Bangor, Wales.

-After he is caught speeding, Paul McCartney is fined $31 and his license is suspended for 1 year

- Former babysitter Little Eva tops the American singles chart with The Locomotion

-Billy Ray Cyrus is born in Flatwoods, Ky

-Judas Priest member Rob Halford is born in Birmingham, England

-KISS member Gene Simmons is born Chaim Witz in Haifa, Israel

-King Crimson pianist Keith Tippett is born in Bristol, England

-West Side Story composer Leonard Bernstein is born in Lawrence, Mass.
