1980s Pop Culture


-Dec. 8, 1980: A day that will live in Beatles fans hearts forever. Former Beatle John Lennon is shot outside his apartment at the Dakota Building in New York by crazed gunman Mark David Chapman. Later on, Yoko Ono's cover for the album Season of Glass would go on to feature John's shattered, bloodstained glasses next to a glass of water overlooking New York
-Peter Sutcliffe, aka the Yorkshire Ripper, is arrested after 13 murders
-Sandra Day O'Connor becomes first female judge to Supreme Court
-Lethal injection is used for first time in Texas
-AIDS virus is discovered
-270 people killed in Lockerbie bombing over Scotland
-Protests in Tiananmen Square in Peking, China
-Space shuttle Challenger explodes 74 seconds after liftoff
-Chernobyl disaster
-May 11, 1981: Bob Marley dies from skin cancer
-The Jamaican National Bobsled team stunned everyone at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Canada. This is what inspired the movie Cool Runnings
-MTV premiers on TV for first time, on Aug. 1, 1981
-Awareness for the disease AIDS is raised with the death of actor and 50s hunk Rock Hudson
-Drug problems increase with the introduction of crack cocaine into the L.A. area
-The Rolling Stones release their Steel Wheels album, are inducted in to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989, and embark on their Steel Wheels/Urban Jungle tour that extends in to 1990.
