Summary
-Andrew Beckett is a gay lawyer with AIDS, that he contracted from engaging in anonymous sex in a pornographic movie theatre. Cast
-Jason Robards: Charles Wheeler
-Joanne Woodward: Sarah Beckett
-Lisa Talerico: Shelby
-Anna Deavere Smith: Anthea Burton
-Antonio Banderas: Miguel Alvarez
-Denzel Washington: Joe Miller
-Tom Hanks: Andrew Beckett
Did You Know?
-Tom Hanks lost 26 pounds for this role
-There was a statistic stating that there were 53 gay men who appeared in various scenes throughout the movie and that 43 of them died. Some of the staff approached the "Action AIDS" non-profit organization to recruit, as extras, 50 or so gay men whose appearance suggested they might have AIDS
-At Beckett's Costume/Memorial Party, there is a man sitting next to the 'Mona Lisa'. He is Quentin Crisp, the British gay celebrity portrayed in the BBC film The Naked Civil Servant, which had John Hurt in it
-The home movies that are being played of Andrew at the end are actual home movies of Tom Hanks in his childhood
-At the costume party, Andrew and Miguel are dressed in U.S. military uniforms. This is a reference to the fact that when the movie was filmed, there was a total ban on gays and lesbians serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. In Dec. 1993, Clinton passed a law, known popularly as "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" enabled gays, lesbians, anyone part of the LGBT communities, to serve as long as they didn't tell anyone their sexual orientation. This remained in effect until Sept. 2011
I'm a girl born in the wrong decade. I belong in the 1960s or the 1970s in my opinion. I bleed tie dye, my theme music is anything 1960s rock or 1970s rock or metal. I'm a hippie through and through. But also a hippie who loves old metal music. I believe that violence never solves anything, so why resort to it to solve problems? With all the wars the world has seen, there should be a clue somewhere in there!
